At 7 am on Saturday morning, from my desk at UCL, I recorded this reflection on Go—also known as Weiqi and Baduk—and the remarkably practical wisdom hidden within its black and white stones. The central lesson is simple: Think ahead. Protect essentials. Trade up. Go teaches us to: • Win the whole game, rather than every local argument • Address urgent dangers before pursuing attractive opportunities • Strengthen our foundations before attacking • Use limited resources efficiently • Preserve flexibility and multiple routes to success • Sacrifice small losses when they enable larger gains • Count honestly, adapt our risk and learn from mistakes The strongest move is rarely the most dramatic one. It is the move that improves the whole position. I also offer a respectful and slightly bearded tribute to my boss, Mike Cox, whose understanding of organisational technology, social dynamics and the Dune novels enables him to examine organisational problems with something approaching X-ray vision. There is even a light-hearted commercial break for IZIS AI Weiqi-Go-Baduk boards—because no serious strategic address should be allowed to continue uninterrupted by modern commerce. Whether you play Go or have never touched a stone, I hope these ideas help you approach work, relationships, leadership and difficult decisions with greater patience, perspective and purpose. May your groups live, your plans remain flexible, your risks be well counted, and your next move be a strong one. So long!
