Meet Athira Krishnan Sreedevi, Quantum Hardware Engineer at planqc.   Athira works in our Quantum Hardware team, contributing to the development of our neutral-atom quantum computing hardware. In the interview, she gives a behind-the-scenes look at what that means in practice: building, testing, and optimizing the systems needed to trap, control, and manipulate atoms reliably – work that connects directly to our mission of creating scalable quantum computers.   She also shares her path into science: training as an experimental physicist, completing her PhD in atomic physics at the National University of Singapore, and working with ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices before moving into industry. What stands out is her perspective on curiosity, community, and hands-on experimentation – from being fascinated by complex lab setups that felt like science fiction to finding confidence through supportive mentors and teammates. Her advice to young women in science and technology is both thoughtful and encouraging: stay curious, keep building your skills and confidence, and do not be afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, and take on challenges that feel intimidating.   One highlight from her journey so far has been defending her PhD thesis after taking on the challenge of restarting a largely inactive lab and running complex ultracold-atom experiments.
