It has been a little over two years since I started my journey as a part-time #contentcreator. Jumping headfirst into this world was one of the best decisions I have made. The time, effort, and energy I invested have already paid off, and I'm sure they will continue to do so for years to come. I'm increasingly being approached by people who want tips on how to start their journey to sharing their expertise on #socialmedia. So I thought I would share a few lessons I wish I had known on day one. 1. Practice trains creativity
It sounds counterintuitive, but you can train your creativity. In the beginning, every step of the process, from writing to filming to editing, takes a lot of time. But the more you do it, the smoother it becomes. Small improvements stack up, and over time, your content will naturally improve. 2. Clarity beats complexity
One of the main mantras in the Will Media newsroom is: If you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough.
Especially when you are competing for attention with football highlights and trending videos, your message needs to be simple and easily digestible.
But simple does not mean simplistic. The goal is to make your message clear and accessible while keeping as much depth and nuance as possible. It's never easy! 3. It takes a village
I have been incredibly lucky to work with amazing editors (Clara Morelli, Paolo Bovio, Pietro Bellini, and Francesco Zaffarano) who really sped up my learning process considerably. Having your work picked apart is one of the most vulnerable experiences I’ve ever felt, but it is also where I’ve learned the most.
TOP TIP: If you are starting out on your own, build your own village. Connect with a few small creators in your niche, share feedback, and grow together. That is how I first met some amazing people and built long-lasting friendships, like with Alessandro Marcia (He/Him). I truly believe that being able to communicate effectively is one increasingly becoming one of the most valuable skills in any field. Have you ever thought about becoming a part-time content creator? #contentcreation #creatoreconomy #behindthescenes
