I rarely post personal items here, but a recent experience felt LinkedIn-worthy. My son was a stellar student in high school. AP everything, strong grades and test scores, and every opportunity in front of him. But he chose a different route: one year in the Airframe and Powerplant Technology program at Mohawk Valley Community College, followed by a new career as a line mechanic with United Airlines at Washington Dulles International Airport. A few weeks ago, standing with him on a boat in Greenland at 11:30 p.m., with the sun still shining brightly, I was struck by how quickly he has built a career, gained independence, and created opportunities for himself. Not to mention, he is happier than I’ve ever seen him. The world truly is his oyster, as evidenced by our 15-hour adventure exploring Greenland together. After 20 years of him flying on my frequent flyer miles, I got to tag along using HIS flight privileges! When he completed his education, he had multiple job offers to choose from; a powerful reminder of the demand for highly skilled technical talent. It’s also a reminder for those of us in higher education that there isn’t one right path after high school. Four-year colleges, trades, apprenticeships, and technical education can all lead to meaningful, successful, and fulfilling lives. Success doesn’t follow a single blueprint and watching your children discover their own path is one of parenting’s greatest rewards. I’m incredibly proud of the man he’s become and grateful for adventures like this one together…made even better if he can get us in the Polaris cabin!
