𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘁 𝗜𝗴𝗔 𝗱𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘂𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲? Terwijl de farmaceutische industrie voor therapeutische antilichamen vrijwel uitsluitend leunt op IgG, blijft het therapeutische potentieel van IgA opvallend onbenut. Dit is een gemiste kans, aangezien IgA-antilichamen juist beter presteren in de slijmvliezen en daarmee goede opties bieden voor innovatieve pulmonale of respiratoire behandelingen, zoals neusdruppels tegen virale infecties. Met de toekenning van de PharmaNL-subsidie start deze maand het consortiumproject PHARMIGA, onder leiding van prof. dr. Albert Heck en prof. dr. Roos Masereeuw (Universiteit Utrecht (Utrecht University)). Dit brede academische en industriële samenwerkingsverband gaat de komende vier jaar niet alleen de translationele stap zetten naar concrete proof-of-concepts, maar ontwikkelt ook de noodzakelijke, specifieke analytische infrastructuur voor de karakterisering van IgA. Heck: “De grootste bottleneck is laten zien dat het echt kan én ervoor zorgen dat anderen het oppakken. De farmaceutische industrie is innovatief, maar ook conservatief. While the pharmaceutical industry relies almost exclusively on IgG for therapeutic antibodies, the therapeutic potential of IgA remains remarkably untapped. This is a missed opportunity, as IgA antibodies perform superiorly in mucous membranes, offering excellent options for innovative pulmonary or respiratory treatments, such as nasal drops against viral infections. With the awarding of the PharmaNL subsidy, the PHARMIGA consortium project launches this month, led by Prof. Dr. Albert Heck and Prof. Dr. Roos Masereeuw (Utrecht University). Over the next four years, this broad academic and industrial partnership will not only take the translational step toward concrete proof-of-concepts, but also develop the necessary, specific analytical infrastructure for the characterization of IgA. Heck: “The biggest bottleneck is demonstrating that it is actually feasible and ensuring that others adopt it. The pharmaceutical industry is innovative, but also conservative.
