⚠️ Steel import changes from 1 July 2026 A quiet policy shift with very loud consequences for UK importers From 1 July, the UK’s tariff‑free quotas on several steel categories will shrink — and once those quotas are breached, a 50% tariff kicks in. For many importers, that isn’t a marginal increase. It’s the difference between a profitable shipment and a loss‑making one. And the real danger? Most businesses won’t realise they’ve crossed the line until the duty bill lands. This is the moment to get ahead of it, not react to it. 🔍 Validate your commodity codes A small misclassification can trigger a very big tariff. Accuracy matters more than ever. 📊 Map your exposure Which SKUs fall under quota‑controlled steel categories? What volumes? What routes? If you don’t know, you’re flying blind. 📦 Review supply chain timing Quota liability depends on arrival, not departure. A vessel slipping a week could change your duty position entirely. 📄 Pressure‑test your contracts If quotas are breached, who pays — you or your supplier? Many contracts don’t make this clear. 🤝 Speak to your Customs partner early Proactive planning beats reactive firefighting. There are strategies to mitigate risk, but only if you start now. If steel — or even steel components — sit anywhere in your supply chain, this is worth a conversation. The businesses that act early will be the ones that protect their margins.
