I’m in Tenerife enjoying a bit of winter sun and trying to avoid Coronavirus. I am staying at the Hotel Jardín Tropical in Adeje. I’ve made 23 visits to this lovely hotel since 1997. Throughout that time Victor has worked at the poolside bar. He started work on site even before the hotel opened, at age 18 and has completed 38 years service. He is kind and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The work is hot and tiring. He is on his feet all day, often dealing with awkward customers. How many Victors are in our businesses and how do we recognise their incredible commitment? Can I suggest that we are absolutely useless at it? Surely a pay cheque is enough? Really? These people like Victor have made you £’000s from happy customers, saved you £’000s in recruitment costs and pilferage and you give them what in return? Here is a clue. ‘Worth their weight in gold’ is not just an expression.
