I have always been interested by the daily life. Not every photograph has to be about an historic event or a moment in time that is extraordinary. Sometimes just looking at people living their lives tells us just as much about a place and its culture. This photograph I made from the back of a taxi in Hong Kong. What attracted me was not a dramatic scene, but the quiet accumulation of details: the identification card of the driver, the ornament hanging, the rearview mirror reflecting my camera, the traffic ahead. All together they made a portrait of everyday life I have spent my career taking photographs of these seemingly insignificant moments. They may appear mundane today, but in time they become fragments of memory - small visual testimonies to the way people lived, worked and moved through the world. Photography does not always have to explain. Sometimes, it simply has to preserve.
