Monument to the Women WWll
Baroness Betty Boothroyd, first and only female Speaker of the House of Commons, led the eight year campaign for the Monument to victory. She had a warm relationship with ‘sculptor to the nation’ John W Mills, far right. Listening intently - far left - is Stephen Prowse, project manager for Appleyards, a key player in the Bletchley Park transformation. Coincidentally, John made a sculpture of codebreaker Alan Turing for Surrey University. Second left is a giant of a man, Major David Robertson, who established and fired up the memorial trust and was made president of the all female ATS gunners reunion organisation known as Ack Ack. I’m the awed witness shaking at the end of an SLR camera, standing in the middle of the Whitehall site where a man on a horse used to be, staring at the windows of Number 10 and thinking - “his story, her story, our story”.
