"For once, it felt like the session was built around people like me." You don't hear that often in a prison. But it's exactly what one participant said after a recent neurodiversity session. Our Inclusion & Engagement Coaches in PeoplePlus Scotland have been running these across the estate, working alongside the Scottish Prison Service. The sessions covered neurodiversity and learning difficulties and disabilities, and they were never meant to be a box ticked on awareness. They were built to start real conversations. And they did. For some, it was the moment things finally clicked: "I didn't realise how much this explained about the way I think and learn. It's been a bit of a turning point for me." For others, it was the language itself: "It's the first time I've heard neurodiversity explained in a way that made sense to me." What came next mattered just as much. People began speaking up for themselves. "It's made me feel more comfortable saying what I need instead of just getting on with it." "Being able to talk openly without feeling judged made a big difference." One participant captured why it lasts: "I've taken away things I can actually use, not just here, but when I move on." The coaches watched confidence grow in the room, and colleagues across the estate saw it too. As one of them put it: "People feel understood, not labelled. That shift is powerful." That's the heart of it. The biggest changes here rarely come from big gestures. They come from a conversation that sparks confidence, a moment of patience, an approach shaped around how someone actually learns. It is quiet, consistent work, and it carries on across Scotland every day. Huge credit to our Inclusion & Engagement Coaches who make it happen. #whatwedomatters #neurodiversity #inclusion #socialvalue #prisoneducation
