"A sense of belonging, safety and positive emotions." That's how one of the thirteen men at HMP Warren Hill described their time with BBC community journalist Jon Wright. Last week Jon spent time with the group exploring how news is reported, the role of journalists, and the ethics behind responsible reporting. Engagement was high throughout, with the men asking thoughtful questions and drawing on Jon's own career and his account of how he first got started in the industry. What landed most was the personal side: his journey, his professional experience, and the open, informal way he shared it. In their feedback, participants described a real impact on their confidence, motivation and wellbeing. As one put it, coming to sessions like this had "helped in a big way" with his confidence and mood. The visit sparked a clear interest in journalism, writing and storytelling, with several men asking how to take it further. If you work in the media and would be open to spending time with learners in custody in this way, we'd like to hear from you. Visits like Jon's are part of our prison education work across England and Scotland. Thank you to Jon Wright for giving his time, and to the library team at HMP Warren Hill for making it happen. #prisoneducation #whatwedomatters #skillsforlife #employability
