Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, commemorates the end of chattel slavery for all enslaved people in the United States. In 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that all enslaved people were free. It serves as a powerful reminder of the fight for freedom and the strength and resilience of Black Americans throughout history. Today, PATH observes Juneteenth with an organization-wide paid holiday. We take a moment to reflect, honor the past, and celebrate the legacy, culture, and achievements of Black communities across the country.
