This week's edition of BBC Radio 4's In Our Time features the Master, Professor Rosalind Polly Blakesley, talking about the life and work of French portrait painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755 - 1842). As a young painter in Paris, Vigée Le Brun painted members of Parisian high society, including Marie Antoinette. She fled France during the French Revolution, moving and working around the courts of Europe, including those of Catherine the Great and her son, Paul I of Russia, eventually returning to he homeland.
