Connecting collectors and museums with The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF)

Cézanne's life-long fascination with the genre of still-life reached its pinnacle in a few paintings from the 1890s, of which ‘Pichet er fruits sur une table’ (1893/94) is a great example with remarkable provenance. During #PaulCézanne's lifetime, the painting was acquired by the Dutch collector Cornelis Hoogendijk (1867-1911) — who bought over 30 Cézannes from Ambroise Vollard between 1897 and 1899. Some years after Hoogendijk's death, the Paris dealer Paul Rosenberg acquired, amongst others, the present still-life. The dealer sold the Cézanne at least three times during his life: in 1920 to the Barnes Foundation (Pennsylvania); in 1936 to Mrs Chester A. Beatty (London) and in 1955 to Laurance S. Rockefeller (New York). In 1989 ‘Pichet er fruits sur une table’ appeared at #Sotheby’s when offered by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño (1930–2013) — heir to the Patino Mining Company. The auction house sold the painting again in 2010 and is now part of the #Qatar royal family collection. Photographed in Ortiz-Patiño’s Swiss house in 1980s, the Cézanne hangs above a Louis XVI commode by #Levasseur (with Randon de Boisset and 10th #DukeofHamilton provenance). #Gauguin’s ‘Mata Mua’ in the adjoining room was bought by Carmen Thyssen in 1984 and is now on loan at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
