Why do so many luxury hotels look the same now? I read a Bloomberg article recently about “The Great Hotel Blanding”. The idea is simple: it’s becoming harder to tell the difference between one expensive hotel room and another. And honestly, I understand why. Neutral tones. Beautiful beds. Marble bathrooms. A nice lamp. A soft robe. Everything looks elegant, but sometimes, it also looks too familiar. That’s why The Mandrake in London stayed with me. From the moment I walked in, I knew this wasn’t a hotel trying to please everyone. Some of the artwork surprised me. Some of the design choices challenged me. The lighting. The secret garden. The theatrical design of the Mandrake Suite. It had a clear point of view, and I wanted to come back to understand who this place was really for. What surprised me most wasn’t just the design. It was the experience. Inside the Damu Spa, it felt like time stopped and the city disappeared. A warm welcome. A cup of tea. The scent of the treatment rooms. Then the Origin Pool, where light, sound and salted water come together in such an immersive way. And my favourite part, the Mud Caves ritual. For a while, time genuinely seemed to stop. No phone. No rushing to the next thing. Just the experience. And that is what I think more travellers are looking for now. Not another beautiful room that could be anywhere, or another trendy corner designed for social media. But a place that has its own atmosphere, rhythm and its own story. This is why I love travelling, exploring different cultures, visiting hotels in person and meeting the people behind them. Because photos can show you the room. But they can’t always tell you which room has the better view, which floor feels quieter, which terrace is worth booking, or which side of the hotel I’d avoid because of noise. That’s the kind of insight that makes a stay feel truly personal. The Mandrake doesn’t follow the usual luxury hotel formula. And that’s what makes it unforgettable. What makes a hotel stay memorable for you: the room, the service or the experience?
