What makes our eyes masters of daylight vision 🌈They enable us to see the world in thousands of colours: Cone opsins are located in the retina of our eyes and are the all-rounders of daylight vision. 🔬But what makes these tiny proteins so fast and efficient? Polina Isaikina and Sarah L. Schmidt from PSI Paul Scherrer Institute have succeeded in visualising and characterising the molecular structure of cone opsins. This has enabled them to explain how these photoreceptor proteins perform their function and why they can react so quickly to incoming light. Why is this important? Defects in these proteins are a well-established cause of colour blindness and contribute to vision loss in retinal diseases. 🚀The new insights could support the development of targeted therapies and, in the long term, inform future approaches to restoring vision.
