🔋What if we could watch lithium move inside a battery, or follow liquids flowing through an engine? ⚛️ Neutron imaging can make this possible. By revealing light elements such as hydrogen and lithium inside dense metallic structures, it offers a powerful complement to X-ray imaging. But the difficulty of focusing and manipulating neutron beams has long limited certain types of experiments. Researchers Mano raj Dhanalakshmi Veeraraj and Joan Vila-Comamala at PSI Paul Scherrer Institute have now developed the world’s first achromatic lens for neutron imaging, capable of focusing neutrons across a broad range of wavelengths. 🔍The lens makes it possible to acquire sharp, magnified images even when the sample is far from the detector – opening the way to studies of thick samples and processes inside bulky equipment such as furnaces, cryostats or pressure cells. The breakthrough draws on PSI’s rare combination of neutron science, X-ray expertise and nanofabrication, all available on one campus. It has now been published in Nature Communications.
