🌱 Fertiliser from wind and sun? What is produced today in large chemical plants could in the future be produced directly where it is needed: ammonia – an indispensable raw material for fertilisers. 🏭 🌍 Researchers from PSI Paul Scherrer Institute and Carnegie Science have examined around 13,000 scenarios worldwide. Their goal: to find out where small local ammonia plants could operate in a low-carbon and economical way. Such systems use hydrogen from the electrolysis of water instead of hydrogen from natural gas. 🗨️ “Ammonia is one of the most useful applications for green hydrogen,” says PSI researcher Tom Terlouw. “Cars and heating systems can be electrified directly. We still need hydrogen to produce ammonia.” ⚡ But be careful: electrically produced ammonia is not automatically classified as low carbon. For example, if the grid electricity comes from burning coal, the carbon footprint can be even worse than with the conventional process.
