Healthcare to the Bioeconomy: My Next Chapter in Improving Lives After nearly a year working in the bioeconomy space, many people have asked why I made the move into biotechnology and sustainability. The answer is simple: I haven’t changed careers—I’ve changed how I aim to make a difference. Throughout my career in healthcare and medtech, my focus was always on improving patient outcomes. Today, that same purpose drives me, but through a broader lens. The health of our planet and the health of our population are inseparable. Addressing climate change, resource scarcity and sustainable production is, in many ways, another form of healthcare. That belief led me to Serkel.bio and the work at Dublin City University. I’ve had the privilege of working with Professor Brian Freeland and the DCU team, who are transforming biological side-streams from brewing, distilling and food industries into valuable, sustainable products. What excites me most is not just the science—it’s the commercial opportunity. At Serkel.bio, we are focused on a model that helps derisk early-stage capital expenditure by validating processes and value streams before large-scale investment. This approach is critical in a sector where uncertainty can slow adoption, and it enables faster, more confident pathways from lab to market. Unlike medtech, where investment pathways are well understood, the bioeconomy is still evolving. The challenge is clear: we must better demonstrate that sustainability and profitability go hand in hand. Ireland has all the ingredients to lead in this space—strong research, a world-class food sector and a proven ability to innovate. The real challenge is translating great science into successful businesses. Because innovation alone isn’t enough. Commercialisation is what creates impact. For me, this isn’t a departure from healthcare—it’s an extension of it. Because healthier people depend on a healthier planet. #Bioeconomy #CircularEconomy #Innovation #Biotechnology #Sustainability #Ireland
