Railway Enthusiast | PhD in Engineering (Railway)

The final paper from my PhD has now been published, and it focuses on a question that is becoming increasingly important as railway automation advances: What do train drivers think about the future of their profession? Train drivers understand railway operations in a way that no algorithm can yet replicate. In our new study, we spoke with 28 Scandinavian drivers who shared what it really means to operate trains in open, unpredictable networks, including the challenges of harsh Arctic conditions. As automation grows, their insights reveal both excitement and concerns. The study points toward a future where technology supports drivers rather than replaces them.
