Auditing has taken me to many places over the years. One of the greatest privileges of working in quality and compliance is that the job rarely ends when the audit closes. Every site, country and conversation offers an opportunity to learn far beyond regulations and procedures. This week that privilege brought me to Perth, Western Australia. Yes, we came to audit. But we also came to experience. Perth is a city that quietly captures your heart. Its stunning skyline, Swan River, parks and coastline are complemented by a vibrant food scene reflecting the diversity of its people. Every meal became part of the journey. What made the trip even more memorable were the people. New friendships formed over shared meals, with conversations moving from work to family, travel and life. Those connections often become just as valuable as anything recorded in an audit report. As an Irish woman, it is impossible not to reflect on our own history while standing on Aboriginal land. Although every nation’s story is unique, both Ireland and Australia’s First Nations peoples share histories shaped by colonisation, resilience and a deep connection to culture and identity. The generosity shown by Aboriginal communities in welcoming visitors to their lands should never be taken for granted. We are privileged to experience places cared for over tens of thousands of years and to learn from one of the world’s oldest living cultures. It also made me think about our role as auditors. When we arrive at a site, we enter someone else’s world. We are guests in their workplace, stepping into their culture and ways of working. While our responsibility is to challenge and assure compliance, we should always do so with humility and respect. The best audits are built on listening, understanding and collaboration, not simply compliance. Travel for work is often seen as airports, hotels and meetings. I see it as an opportunity to experience different cultures, enjoy great food, make lasting friendships and return home with a broader perspective. Sometimes the most valuable outcome of an audit is not strengthening a quality system.
