"I feel like my passport is holding me back." A teacher said what is on the minds of many teachers trying to get a foot into international teaching. Same qualifications as colleagues, years of experience and strong references...but fewer responses when applying for international roles. It’s a difficult topic, and one that doesn’t get discussed openly enough in international education. The reality is that hiring decisions are influenced by many factors beyond classroom ability including visa requirements, government regulations, and local hiring frameworks. That doesn’t make the situation easy for teachers navigating the market. But it does highlight how complex international recruitment really is. At Pathfind, we believe transparency matters. Teachers deserve honest conversations about the landscape they’re entering, and schools deserve support navigating the constraints they work within. Because ultimately, the goal is the same for everyone involved: Getting great teachers in front of the students who need them.
