Unpopular opinion: Overcrowding in the gate area is the real bottleneck π Everyone is improving yard operations. But the truck driver is also watching the gate. π«΅ In 2026, status reports show that the Hamburg transshipment hubβs utilization rate is nearly 90%, which is straining throughput at the gate and that some transshipment hubs in Rotterdam are operating at near full capacity. The headlines focus on berth productivity and the number of transshipments per hour. And thatβs one of the gaps. π Profits made at the dock are partly wiped out by inefficiencies in the hinterland: - lines at the gate - congestion at the transshipment area - a driver wasting two hours on a 15-minute job And yes, we all know how difficult it can sometimes be to optimize brownfield terminals. We all want to coordinate the existing flow, create predictable arrival times, correct documentation before the truck pulls up and assign lanes according to demand. And yes, such projects during daily operations take time and are a hassle, but they usually offer relatively low-cost leverage when it comes to further optimizing the entire handling process. Performance at the berth makes a good impression. Performance at the Gate ensures satisfied customers. π§ #PortLogistics #TerminalOperations #SupplyChain
