In many developing economies, the problem is not a lack of ideas or demand, but a lack of markets that work. Businesses struggle to access long term finance, regulations are still evolving, and early investors carry risks that commercial capital is not yet willing to take. Development finance institutions exist to operate in this space, using capital and expertise to help markets develop to the point where private investment can sustain them. Despite past successes, markets remain fragile, and economies such as the US and UK are shifting investment priorities. British International Investment’s new five year strategy reflects a growing recognition that development finance must focus not only on deploying capital, but on the conditions that allow markets to function and endure. In a new opinion piece, Palladium’s Linda Muruganandan (née Aaslien) explores why this shift matters—and what will determine whether ambition translates into durable market outcomes. https://lnkd.in/eUz9AdBU #Palladium l British International Investment l #BII l #DevelopmentFinance
