Small-scale models can hide scale-up risk. In one of our Ambr setups, mixing took about 4 seconds without an insert. With our scale-down insert, mixing time increased to more than 30 seconds. That matters because cells experience 30 seconds very differently than 4 seconds. At large scale, they move through zones with different local conditions and residence times. A very homogeneous small-scale model may miss that. Our scale-down inserts help process development teams add defined heterogeneity into small-scale DoEs, so they can test more scale-up-relevant stress conditions earlier. Is your small-scale model challenging the process in the right way? If this is relevant for your team, send us a message. #bioprocessing #scaledown #processdevelopment #bioreactors
