Wu-Yen Sun Oxford Institute for Energy Studies Energy Comment - Decentralized Exchanges, Oil Perpetual Futures, and Implications for Oil Markets: A Hyperliquid Case Study 👉 Link to paper: https://lnkd.in/dr_pAxRK Key points: 🔹Trading activity in oil perpetual futures on Hyperliquid increased sharply following the US–Israel–Iran war, with open interest exceeding 10 million virtual barrels in April and daily trading volume frequently surpassing 10 million barrels in recent months. 🔹Despite this rapid growth, the market remains small relative to established oil futures markets. For comparison, ICE Brent crude futures have open interest exceeding 2.5 billion paper barrels, while daily trading volume regularly exceeds 1 billion barrels. 🔹Hyperliquid's 24/7 trading provides continuous price discovery during weekends, holidays, and other periods when traditional exchanges are closed. However, because oil futures already trade for 23 hours on business days, it remains an open question whether elevated trading activity on Hyperliquid will persist once geopolitical tensions in the Middle East subside. 🔹Incumbent exchanges and regulators are paying attention. Recent developments—including the CFTC's approval of a regulated Bitcoin perpetual futures contract, ICE's partnership with OKX, and CME's plans for 24/7 WTI trading—suggest that perpetual contracts and around-the-clock trading are increasingly viewed as commercially relevant innovations. 🔹Challenges to broader institutional adoption include permissionless market creation, distributed message ordering, limited institutional trading services, account-level transparency, and the latency and throughput gap between blockchain-based and incumbent exchange infrastructure. 🔹While decentralized exchanges are unlikely to match incumbent exchanges in trading execution, blockchain-based infrastructure could improve post-trade functions such as margin administration, collateral management, settlement efficiency, and overall capital utilization. #oil #energy #commodities #oilmarkets #derivatives #futures #geopolitics #oott
