The future of healthcare IT isn't a single platform; it's an open ecosystem. 🏥 Last Monday, we joined the 2026 Open Innovation Challenge "openEHR for Clinical Innovation" at University Hospital Basel. Philippe Hefti (Partner at OWT) hosted the breakout session "Creating the future digital hospital" and joined the closing partner panel. One question framed the whole discussion: if we rebuilt a hospital's digital infrastructure today, what would we do differently? What stood out across the sessions: 👉 The digital hospital is an ecosystem, not a product. No single vendor or platform builds it. It emerges from clinicians, IT, startups and partners working on shared, open foundations; 👉 Open infrastructure is what makes AI usable in care. Structured, openEHR-based data is the precondition for clinical AI that's traceable and trustworthy, not a black box; 👉 The hard part isn't platform selection; it's adoption, governance, and change. Technology rarely fails the hospital; the operating model around it does; 👉 Interoperability has to be designed from the start. openEHR, FHIR and existing systems need to coexist by design, not be bolted together afterwards. For OWT, this is exactly where we work: helping Swiss hospitals turn open standards into infrastructure that clinicians actually use and which remains independent of any single vendor. Thank you to Personalized Health Basel (PHB), University Hospital Basel (USB), DayOne - Healthtech Innovation and our fellow partners Better, x-tention and Tieto Caretech for this great day. 👏 The challenge is still open!
