When Ellen's Oscar selfie broke Twitter in 2014, I was at Blizzard and had to move quickly to capitalize on it. In a matter of minutes, we put twelve iconic characters jammed into the same frame, and it took off! The joke landed because everyone already knew the reference — one selfie at an awards show had generated enough cultural gravity that we could riff on it without explaining anything. Unfortunately, we couldn't pull this off today with the same impact. Not because creative instincts got worse, but because the thing that made it work has broken.
