When we think about security, we don't always think about environmental threats. But sometimes the greatest danger is hidden in plain sight. For decades, residents of Novopavlovka, Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬, lived next to stockpiles of toxic Cold War-era rocket fuel components. As storage containers deteriorated, the risk of environmental contamination and harm to public health continued to grow. Through long-term international cooperation, the final tonnes of Mélange and Samin were removed by the end of 2024, making Kyrgyzstan free from toxic rocket fuel remnants.
