I am incredibly proud to announce that our recent collaborative study has been officially accepted and published in Pathogens, a highly regarded Q1 journal spanning the fields of Infectious Diseases, General Immunology, and Microbiology. Serving as a Co-Principal Investigator, Medical Diagnostic Labs (MDLAB) at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group (HMG) actively contributed to this critical regional surveillance paper titled: "Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance of Uropathogens in a Tertiary Care Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A One-Year Retrospective Analysis". Led by Dr. Fizza Khalid, our comprehensive retrospective study analyzed 19,556 urine cultures to map out regional uropathogen prevalence and escalating resistance trends. Key Findings from our Research: 1. Predominant Pathogens: Escherichia coli (65.9%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (16.8%) remain the leading causes of UTIs, with a significantly higher prevalence observed in females, particularly in the 16–30 and 31–45 age brackets. 2. High ESBL Burden: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production was detected in 28.5% of all E. coli and Klebsiella isolates. 3. Widespread Co-Resistance: ESBL-producing strains exhibited extensive resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations, and fluoroquinolones (with an alarming 81.6% ciprofloxacin resistance rate in ESBL E. coli), severely challenging historical empirical treatments. 4. Preserved Efficacy: Reassuringly, carbapenems, aminoglycosides (amikacin and gentamicin), and fosfomycin maintained very low resistance profiles, standing out as highly effective therapeutic options. 5. Emerging Threats: The surveillance also flagged a growing hospital and community burden of high-risk multidrug-resistant organisms, identifying vancomycin-resistant enterococci (7%), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (2%), and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (0.9%). Ultimately, these findings emphasize that traditional, uniform empirical protocols are losing their efficacy. There is an urgent, actionable need for patient-stratified local surveillance and heavily reinforced antimicrobial stewardship programs across both inpatient and outpatient settings to curb multidrug resistance.
