On #TransformationTuesday, meet Afia from Ghana, a happy-go-lucky and energetic young girl who loves reading and riding her bike. At just six, she has already set her sights on becoming a doctor. But despite her big ambitions, Afia has been held back from reaching her full potential due to strabismus (misalignment of the eyes). Her mom first noticed something was wrong when Afia was just three months old. Her eyes didn’t turn inward as expected, with her left eye more pronounced. To focus, she relied on tilting her head—affecting both her learning in the classroom and her balance. Now, after life-changing eye surgery at our partner Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, in Kumasi, Afia can look forward to a brighter, more independent future. When she saw herself in the mirror, Afia smiled with newfound confidence. Her relieved mom shared, “When she opened her eyes, I was so happy. I wanted to shout." A huge thank you to our incredible supporters and partners for helping improve eye care and transform lives like Afia’s around the world.
