This week is #NationalVolunteersWeek in the US — an annual moment each April to recognize and thank the millions of people who give their time and skills to support causes they care about. It’s a chance to celebrate the impact volunteers make, often quietly and behind the scenes, in communities around the world. At Orbis, our work simply wouldn’t be possible without our Volunteer Faculty. More than 400 ophthalmologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and biomedical engineers share their expertise every year to help strengthen eye care systems globally. One of those volunteers is Dr. Henry O’Halloran, a long‑time Orbis Volunteer Faculty member and a true Hero of Orbis. Dr. O’Halloran has spent years traveling with the Flying Eye Hospital, working side by side with local eye care teams in challenging settings. During Orbis’s Flying Eye Hospital project in Mongolia, he focused on helping doctors build practical surgical skills that work in low‑resource environments — including how to operate successfully using fewer instruments and materials. His approach is about making sure training translates into real‑world care long after the plane has left. By mentoring local surgeons and adapting techniques to fit local realities, Dr. O’Halloran helps ensure patients can continue receiving sight‑saving care in their own communities. It’s work rooted in partnership, respect, and a deep commitment to teaching. This National Volunteers Week, we’re grateful to Dr. O’Halloran and to every Orbis volunteer who gives their time, knowledge, and energy to help save sight around the world. Thank you to our volunteers, supporters, and partners for making this work possible. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eSKknRHw
