During this hands-on training week, our team of expert volunteers and clinical staff is working alongside partners at Hospital Regional Honorio Delgado Espinoza, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Arequipa Regional Government of Health. Across the week, 25 people were screened for strabismus, including 22 children and 3 adults. From those screenings, around 16 children will go on to receive treatment, with 14 strabismus surgeries and 2 botulinum toxin interventions completed. Working side by side with local eye health professionals, our Volunteer Faculty and staff are sharing hands‑on skills in pediatric strabismus care (led by ophthalmologist Dr. Ana Foronda), ophthalmic nursing (led by Flying Eye Hospital nurse Elisa Urruchi alongside three regional nurses), and anesthesia (led by anesthesiologist Dr. Ghalib Mukadam). This project is strengthening local skills, deepening collaboration, and helping ensure improved access to eye care for children in Peru. A huge thank you to the staff, volunteers, local partners, and supporters who make this all possible. Stay tuned for more updates from Arequipa!
