A recent training project at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (IRO) in Trujillo, Peru focused on vitreoretinal surgery. Led by Volunteer Faculty Dr. Maria Berrocal, the program provided advanced surgical training to two senior retina specialists, Dr. Norma Kemper and Dr. Martha Manrique, alongside lectures and case discussions to strengthen clinical knowledge and surgical decision-making. By building local expertise in complex retinal care, the project is helping to strengthen Peru’s eye care system and improve access to high-quality services for patients with sight-threatening conditions. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Maria Berrocal said: "The local ophthalmologists are all eager to learn and to serve their patients. They want to be able to provide the best care possible to their communities."
