Each week, Dominic leaves his small rural community in the South Island and travels to Auckland for work. What surprised him most wasn’t the pace of the city - it was the scale of homelessness. Seeing people trying to find shelter in the heart of the CBD shifted something for him. He told us it made him realise how incredibly hard it must be just finding shelter, let alone safety or comfort. That’s what led him to Orange Sky. “Volunteering with Orange Sky has become something of a highlight of my week. I’ve met some excellent people, and it’s given me an opportunity to do something practically useful in a way that combines companionship & connectivity with respect & dignity.” Now, every fortnight on shift in Auckland, Dominic shows up with kindness and kōrero - proving that community isn’t about where you live, but how you choose to show up.
