Our executive director, Chris Hagerbaumer, was interviewed for this excellent article in Nonprofit Quarterly, which describes not only how philanthropy is falling short in addressing one of the greatest threats to human health, but also the huge geographic mismatch between where philanthropy funds clean air efforts and where air pollution is worst. The article is informed by experts in the field of air quality action, including Weenarin Lulitanonda with Thailand Clean Air Network (who discusses the Global North’s responsibility) and Ruaraidh Dobson with South London Scientific (who describes how dollars might be spent most effectively), as well as donors who are stepping up to the plate, including as Sean Maguire at Clean Air Fund (who unpacks the mismatch along with Chris Hagerbaumer) and Christa Hasenkopf at Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) (who describes the incredible bang for the buck). Our favorite quote (by Christa Hasenkopf): If you were an alien looking at this problem, you’d be like, ‘Why in the world are these beings putting all their funding where the pollution is not as bad and there’s way less population?"
