This excellent article by Jennifer Gibson and Kaitlin Thaney in Issues in Science and Technology describes the serious sustainability issues that open research infrastructures face. Despite the 'efficiency gains, enhanced innovation, and economic growth' associated with open scientific infrastructures and the fact that they are orders of magnitude less expensive than their commercial counterparts, many have been forced to close due to lack of operational funding.
