Today, the Ontario Heritage Trust and the Soccer Hall of Fame – Ontario, with support from the City of Cambridge, unveiled a provincial plaque commemorating Galt Football Club. In the early 1900s, a soccer club from a small Ontario community of about 9,000 people became one of Canada’s greatest sporting teams. Galt Football Club emerged from one of the earliest organized soccer movements outside the United Kingdom. The club rose to national prominence and won the first Olympic gold medal awarded in soccer at the 1904 games in St. Louis. The plaque stands in Dickson Park, where Galt F.C. once played. It restores the club’s place in Ontario’s sporting heritage and highlights the province’s role in the history of a game now played around the world.
