"I’ll use my freedom well.” Josiah Henson made this promise as he journeyed to freedom in Canada. Today is Juneteenth, a day on which the United States commemorates the end of slavery and celebrates freedom. Henson was an abolitionist, preacher and Underground Railroad conductor, and like many others, made a perilous journey to Canada to escape enslavement before it was outlawed in America. Henson was a respected community leader who uplifted and empowered former refugees of American slavery and members of the free Black community near present-day Dresden, Ontario.
