Read our latest publication by Thom Nijboer and Bas Keizers on intraoperative fluorescence guided fresh frozen sectioning for margin control in head and neck cancer using the tumour targeting tracer cetuximab-IRDye800CW. In this phase 2 trial, combining #FluorescenceMolecularImaging with fresh frozen sectioning gave surgeons real-time margin feedback during surgery. This correctly classified margins in 95% of patients, reducing inadequate margin rates from 50% to 15%. It also decreased or omitted adjuvant treatment in 70% of patients who would otherwise have needed it. A promising method that could redefine how surgeons assess and correct margins during head and neck cancer surgery.
