Transitional justice is such a tightrope. As Syria's transitional government begins indicting officials connected to the Assad administration and accused of committing war crimes, Deborah Amos of #ForeignPolicy highlights exactly why it is imperative that the al-Sharaa administration balance the anger of Syrians on Syrian soil with the country's need to follow the rules of the international community it has to lean on in its current precarious state. I have previously written about how retaliatory 'justice' and sectarian violence, in the wake of the #SyrianCivilWar will hinder Syria's progress towards a truly unified nation in the long-term. Whatever Syria's judicial system decides, the victims and their families gaining real peace and closure has to be prioritized in order for it to be real justice.
