In the early 1900s, Elias Olschwanger (“Reb Elias” in Anna Olswanger's SHLEMIEL CROOKS) and his family moved to 1315 Carr Street in St. Louis, one block away from the scene in this photograph, which was Wash Street, looking west from 13th Street. The E. Olschwanger Liquor Company, the site of the attempted robbery in SHLEMIEL CROOKS, was around the corner at 1028 N. 14th Street. From a postcard of the same time period located in the State Historical Society of Missouri, St. Louis.
