Between heritage fabric and contemporary intervention The extension and refurbishment of the Myer Music Centre at Melbourne Grammar School carefully reinterprets a listed 1960s building for contemporary use. Originally designed by Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell, the ensemble now combines historic substance with new spaces for teaching, rehearsal and performance. The architectural redevelopment was led by Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design. A defining feature of the project are the continuous façade bands made with OKATECH Copper, which allow the distinctive butterfly roof to appear almost weightless. The expanded metal meshes integrated into the insulating glass act as a finely tuned filter balancing daylight, transparency and privacy. Depending on changing light conditions, the copper mesh subtly alters the perception of depth and materiality across the building envelope. Together with our Australian representative Architectural Glass & Cladding, we were pleased to contribute to the realization of this architecturally refined façade solution. The project received several distinctions, including the Heritage Architecture Award and the Educational Architecture Award by the Australian Institute of Architects.
