Daylight control with expanded metal mesh The renovation and expansion of the Hong Kong Museum of Art (香港藝術館) has given this longstanding cultural institution a renewed presence on the waterfront of Tsim Sha Tsui in the heart of Victoria Harbour. Designed by the Architectural Services Department of Hong Kong, the project features a distinctive relief-like façade composition with convex and concave elements that add depth and dynamism to the building while strengthening the connection between the city, the harbour and the museum spaces. For the gallery areas, OKATECH aluminium expanded metal mesh was selected. The white-coated elements with customised apertures support daylight control while preserving the characteristic three-dimensional appearance of the material. The sculptural building envelope, with façade elements reaching heights of up to 4.9 metres, echoes this spatial quality and creates a layered façade that changes in appearance depending on the light conditions. The project demonstrates how materiality, daylight management and façade design can be brought together to form a coherent architectural concept.
