Today, on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we honor the resilience of survivors worldwide and reaffirm our commitment to eradicating torture in all its forms. Women and girls may be targeted with forms of torture, including sexual violence in armed conflict, because they are women. The physical and psychological impacts can be profound and long-lasting. Many survivors also face stigma, discrimination, and other barriers to accessing support and seeking justice. These challenges affect every stage of recovery and make it harder for survivors to rebuild their lives. No survivor should be denied care, protection, or justice because of their gender.
