🌊 At the 11th Our Ocean Conference, currently taking place in Kenya and for the first time in an African country, many African and global civil society organisations have published an urgent call on governments and banks to stop offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation in African waters. The call raises serious concerns about offshore activities across African marine areas, in both the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic, reaching from the Orange Basin to the Kavango Basin to South Africa. 👉 To counter the climate crisis and the loss of marine species and habitats, the coalition calls for an end to the continued dependency on fossil fuels and a consistent energy transition in line with ocean and climate protection goals. This expansion stands against the objectives of the Paris Agreement and commitments to protect and preserve the marine biodiversity, prevent ocean pollution and ensure equitable sharing of benefits. OceanCare has joined this call with more than 110 signees. 🌊 The global crises we face are closely interlinked, and continuing to commit to fossil fuel dependency is a fatal mistake. What is needed is a coherent and consistent climate and ocean policy. Ending offshore oil exploration would also significantly reduce one of the most persistent human-made sources of underwater noise: seismic airgun surveys. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dgTh9J45 Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) #GlobalGasAndOilNetwork #FossilFreeOceanInitiative #OOC11 #OurOceanConference #StopFossilFuels #OOC11 #OurOceanConference #StopFossilFuels
