Water in the Middle East sits at the intersection of food production, energy generation, and industrial output. When non-conventional water sources like desalination are taken offline, the shortage ripples through every sector that depends on a reliable supply. Mohammed Mahmoud, PhD, Middle East Climate and Water Policy Lead at The United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), and Chief Executive Officer of the Climate and Water Initiative (CWI), explains why water infrastructure is one of the most consequential and least visible casualties of the ongoing Middle East crisis. Observer Research Foundation Middle East, in collaboration with The United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), co-hosted an online panel discussion on "Reverberating Effects for Fertilizer, Food, and Water Security in Times of Conflict". The conversation is a part of the contribution to the UN Water Conference Academic Hub.
