Kua hinga tētahi tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne. A tōtara tree has fallen in the great forest of Tāne. We are deeply saddened by the news of Sam Neill's passing. Not only was Sam a beloved Kiwi film legend, but he was also an iconic figure in the New Zealand wine industry. Sam was a tireless advocate for New Zealand wine over many decades. After purchasing his first vineyard block in Central Otago in 1991, he established Two Paddocks in 1993. What began as a desire to share those ethereal Pinot Noir moments with family and friends grew into one of New Zealand's most respected wine brands. Along the way, Sam helped introduce our wines, regions and people to audiences around the world. Earlier this month, Sam was recognised as a Fellow of New Zealand Winegrowers, a peer-nominated group of highly respected and influential individuals whose leadership, innovation, hard work and passion have helped shape the success of New Zealand wine. This was a fitting acknowledgement of his extraordinary contribution to our industry. Sam generously used his profile, talents, and distinctive voice to promote New Zealand wine, bringing authenticity, warmth and global attention to the people, places, and stories of the wine community. He spoke warmly of what the honour meant to him, recognising not only his more than 35 years in New Zealand wine, but also the dedicated Two Paddocks team and the Central Otago region that shared in that journey. Sam's film legacy will continue to captivate audiences for generations. Equally enduring is the philosophy he championed through his wines: that great wine, shared around the table with family and friends, is one of life's true pleasures. Our thoughts are with Sam's whānau, friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him, both on screen and in the vineyard. Moe mai rā, Sam. Rest in peace.
