Fifty years after Soweto, the Day of the African Child calls us to reflect on the question, are we protecting Africa’s children in the physical places where they spend their days, and with the materials they need to play and grow? This year's Day of the African Child theme calls for "Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa." Here's what the data from three Kenyan counties tells us: 🚿 Fewer than half of home-based childcare settings have access to infrastructure to meet minimum handwashing standards 🪣 In 7% of settings, there is no adequate toilet facility 📚 Only 18% of settings have books, the most basic tool for a child's development These aren't edge cases. This is the system. Across the continent, home-based childcare Providers are doing essential, foundational work, often alone and without the support they deserve. The children are already there.
