“Why don’t you come up to Glasgow, Yang Berhormat Dato?” That was the question I asked our Minister of Health last year. The rest, as they say, is history. It was an honour and privilege to welcome Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Md Isham bin Haji Jaafar and the Ministry of Health delegation to Glasgow - and to organise this Dialogue Session for the first time ever in Scotland, in my capacity as President of the Brunei Medical Students' Association (BMSA). I had the opportunity to deliver the welcoming remarks and moderate a thought-provoking panel discussion and Q&A session. The evening offered invaluable updates from the Ministry, covering training pathways and the evolving vision for Brunei’s healthcare system. This event marked a record-breaking attendance of delegates and witnessed a rare and meaningful gathering of Bruneians in Scotland. It was truly heartening to see so many peers come together; reconnecting, exchanging ideas, and finding real value in the session. 💡 Key takeaways: – First impressions matter: impress your nurses and seniors; their recommendation could open doors you never expected – Stay connected: maintaining regular communication with your Bruneian counterparts is essential - don’t let yourself fade from the radar – Be proactive, not reactive: identify gaps or challenges early and take the initiative to create positive change in your future practice – Own your path: your career in Brunei’s healthcare system is what you make of it - take charge and carve out your own journey – Opportunities abound: there is a growing demand across many specialties in Brunei, with Paediatrics standing out as a key area of need I hope our collective enthusiasm in understanding the current healthcare landscape reflects our deep-rooted patriotism and shared passion in building a healthier Brunei, together. Alhamdulillah, a heartfelt thank you to my amazing BMSA team (Gabriel Chan, Danial Hardiny, Grace Kuan, Patricia Sim, Henry Lim, Allyn Hoh, Jadrien Lo, Rashieqah Nadhierah Nor Yusof ' Ain, Bazilah Fadzillah, Faiq Shahari & others), Brunei Students Unit and Brunei Glasgow Society for their support in making this event a success.
